While the concept of solar powered lights seems counter intuitive at first, the newer ones using LED's and an internal battery makes a row of lights alongside a walkway a bright idea!
Three Reasons to Consider Low Voltage Landscape LightingOften, landscaping is associated purely with the natural. We think of landscaping as the use of natural elements to create an aesthetically pleasing environment. It is true that landscaping does utilize human-made components (decks, porches, and the like), but these are usually seen more as part of construction than as an element of true landscaping. However, there is one non-natural element that may be of great use to any landscape: low voltage landscape lighting. Low voltage landscape lighting operates on twelve-volt current. This is the same kind of electrical current utilized by children’s toys, such as electric trains, and represents a far smaller electrical draw than most forms of lighting. Low voltage landscape lighting is a safe way of bringing electric light to the outdoors. Why would one want to light their yard? There are at least three very good reasons to consider the use of low voltage landscape lighting. The first rationale is probably the most obvious. We spend a great deal of time and energy designing and implementing our landscaping plans. We also tend to spend many hours a day awake after the sun goes down. During the spring and summer, or in temperate climates, many evening hours are actually spent outdoors. Low voltage landscape lighting supplies us with a way to more completely enjoy our landscaping efforts during these darker hours. Secondly, low voltage landscape lighting adds another layer of home security to the residences using it. Property crime is always a concern, whether it is a fear of theft or worries over vandalism. Research has demonstrated again and again that property crimes are far less likely to occur in areas that are lit during the evening hours. Low voltage landscape lighting makes offenses less likely, protecting one’s home and yard against criminal activity. Finally, a lit outdoor area maximizes safety. If one is going to be outdoors at night, a darkened yard can be dangerous. The risk of slips and falls is far greater when one is unable to see clearly. Low voltage landscape lighting provides a way to subtly light walkways and other areas where accidents might otherwise occur. Bringing electric light to a landscape has some very real advantages. Whether one simply wants to spend more time enjoying their beautiful yard or they are concerned about security and safety, low voltage landscape lighting may be the perfect addition to their outdoor space.
